"Festen" hits hard at the Gamm

By Rick Massimo “This is the party that never ends,” says the hapless Poul near the end of “Festen,” the play that opened Monday night at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre. And sure enough, the play, an adaptation of the 1998 Thomas Vinterberg film, is structured as an interminably painful family gathering that’s blasted to pieces by painful revelations. The theater implores critics not to reveal any of the revelations – OK, I won’t, but really they’re not all that surprising. What hits like a hammer is the family dynamic, and the denial, that follows the revelations by Christian at the party for his father, Helge’s, 60th birthday with the whole family in attendance. It sounds like it could be stultifyingly melodramatic, and in lesser hands it probably would be. But thanks to unsparingly realistic direction by Tony Estrella and powerful performances, especially by Will Lyman (the patriarch Helge) and Steve Kidd, Casey Seymour Kim and Alexander Platt as his three children, “Festen,” while formally pretty straightfoward, has such a merciless honesty that it feels like something new. A full review of “Festen” will appear in Thursday’s Providence Journal. Continue reading

Partial WaterFire to brighten the holidays on Friday, Dec. 16

By Bill Van Siclen Here’s a helpful holiday reminder: Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, there will be a partial WaterFire lighting on Friday, Dec. 16. According to organizers, 36 of WaterFire’s trademark floating braziers will be lit along the Providence waterfront, between One Citizens Plaza and the College Street Bridge, beginning at 5 p.m. The fires will continue burning through 8:30 p.m. Besides offering some extra holiday cheer, the event will benefit the Providence Rescue Mission , a Christian nonprofit that provides food, counseling and other services to people in need. A note posted on the WaterFire web site urges Rhode Islanders to support the mission by bringing unwrapped gifts, including food and clothing, to Market Square during the lighting. Friday’s WaterFire will also feature a number of family-friendly activities, among them: a chance to meet and have your picture with Santa Claus, Christmas caroling and live music performances and free hot chocolate and apple cider, courtesy of Dunkin’ Donuts. During the day, representatives from the Providence Rescue Mission will be serving free lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Market Square. The menu: grilled burgers and Cajun chicken sandwiches donated by Capital Grille and 1149 Restaurant. (Photo credit: The Providence Journal) Continue reading
