StyleWeek runway report: Karla Marie Quiroz

By Jenna Pelletier Providence Journal photo/Ruben Perez Providence, R.I. — University of Rhode Island senior and Cranston resident Karla Marie Quiroz filled the runway with fun, flirty designs at her debut StyleWeek Providence show Friday. Her “Froze in Khaos” collection was inspired by the elements of fire and ice. The first part of the show featured several short, icy blue dresses embellished with sequins, sparkles and bows. The latter part brought on the drama with gowns made from lipstick red lace. The 21-year old designer is expected to graduate this spring with a degree in textiles, fashion merchandising and design.

Rascal Flatts brings platinum country to the Dunk

By Rick Massimo PROVIDENCE – The platinum-selling trio Rascal Flatts wheeled into the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Friday night with a hatful of the melodies, harmonies and lyrical earnestness that have propelled them to the top of the charts in their 12-year career. Sara Evans preceded them, her big voice easily handling stately ballads such as “A Little Bit Stronger” as well as ruckus-raisers such as the train-rhythm “Coal Mine,” also guesting with the headliners on “Easy.” And 20-year-old Hunter Hayes, who opened the show, showed some nicely melodic lead guitar chops, but his songs were fairly generic.
